Diagnostic Services invites applications to provide technical assistance and related laboratory services in the Postmortem Laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working in the Postmortem Laboratory assisting pathologists with necropsies in a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic animal species and performing technical duties.  These duties will include: 

  • Accepting carcasses from clients and taking case histories 
  • Dissection of a large variety of aquatic and terrestrial animals
  • Appropriately handling and disposing of tissues and carcasses and chemical waste 
  • Providing private cremation services
  • Assisting in the creation and updating of standard operating procedures in the postmortem area
  • Ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment for the postmortem lab within the budget provided
  • Collection and fixation of tissue specimens for teaching purposes, aiding in student laboratory and rotation preparation, assisting in the supervision of students on the postmortem floor
  • Sampling of aquatic species for surveillance/disease screening 
  • Trimming of formalin fixed tissues and assisting pathologists with aquatic and mammalian cases
  • General cleaning and maintenance of the laboratory and equipment, including hand saws, a vertical band saw, and knives
  • Operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial incinerator

QUALIFICATIONS: 
 

  • Related diploma or BSC with extensive necropsy/autopsy experience, experience assisting pathologists in a postmortem setting, and experience trimming formalin fixed tissues
  • Experience training students in a pathology-related field
  • Knowledge of mammal and aquatic anatomy and/or forensic pathology would be an asset
