Diagnostic Services invites applications from experienced and motivated medical laboratory technologists to provide technical and related laboratory services in the discipline of Hematology and in other disciplines of the Clinical Pathology Laboratory, including Chemistry, Endocrinology and Urinalysis. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful technologist will be primarily involved in routine processing of hematology, coagulation and cytology submissions. As a secondary role, the incumbent will also process biochemistry and urinalysis submissions from aquatic animals, livestock, companion animals, birds and wildlife. 

  • Preparation and staining of blood smears, morphological evaluation of stained blood smears
  • Performing complete blood counts using automated hematology analyzers (Sysmex XN and Zoetis HM5) and manual methods
  • Performing coagulation tests using the Stago Coagulation analyzer, performing chemistry tests using the Cobas Pure, Cobas c501, VS2 and iSTAT chemistry analyzers; and performing endocrinology tests using the Immulite and Cobas Pure endocrinology analyzers
  • Processing (including cytospin preparation) of fluid and cytology submissions and performing urinalysis is also required
  • Blood banking submissions are also processed.  Daily running of Quality Control (QC) material, verification of QC protocols and troubleshooting QC materials and automated instruments are part of this position 
  • Entry of patient demographics and results in a Lab Information System are required
  • Veterinary-specific training will be provided to the successful applicant

QUALIFICATIONS: 
 

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) designation with certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science is required 
  • 1 year of related diagnostic experience, preferably in hematology is required
  • Excellent organizational, computer and communication skills are required
  • Experience with quality control protocols
  • Good bench skills are essential
  • The ability to work under minimal supervision, to multitask and to troubleshoot technical issues at the bench and instrument level is desirable
